Tom de Souza

Tom de Souza tells stories. He seeks personal and professional freedom by pursuing a different kind of life along the road less travelled.

Tom’s work as a freelance journalist has earned him three consecutive WA Media Awards, and been published in national and global publications: The Australian, BBC, The Age, and The Sydney Morning Herald.

But Tom’s story hasn’t always been of success. Aged 14, he began injecting ice. He spent most of his teenage years in and out of juvenile detention. Ice almost ended his life, twice. These encounters with death were catalysts for change.

Tom discovered writing whilst travelling in Morocco, aged 18. It is the form of self-expression that was latent in him for so many years. In 2017, Tom wrote his story as a feature-length piece for The Australian. He is currently writing a book and working with youth, which are helping him to repay his debt to society.

Dr Gregory Peel Smith was once a mysterious man who roamed the forest, while local writer & photographer Tom de Souza lost his teenage years to ice addiction and crime. This session provides a unique insight into how life can go off track and a powerful reminder that we can find our way back.
